Prostate enlargement, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), is a condition that affects men as they age. The prostate is a gland located beneath the bladder that produces semen. As men age, the prostate gland can enlarge and put pressure on the urethra, which can cause urinary symptoms such as:
- Weak urine flow
- Difficulty starting and stopping urination
- Frequent urination, especially at night (nocturia)
- Urgency to urinate
- Incomplete emptying of the bladder
- Dribbling at the end of urination
The exact cause of BPH is unknown, but it is believed to be related to hormonal changes that occur with age. Treatment options for BPH include lifestyle modifications, medication, and surgery. Lifestyle modifications may include avoiding caffeine and alcohol, and limiting fluids before bedtime. Medications used to treat BPH include alpha-blockers, which relax the muscles in the prostate and bladder neck, and 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors, which help shrink the prostate gland. Surgery may be recommended if symptoms are severe or if other treatments have been ineffective. There are several surgical options available, including transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) and laser surgery. It is important for men experiencing symptoms of BPH to discuss their treatment options with a healthcare provider.
